How to get Kaltura captions in a language other than English
print icon

Kaltura supports closed captioning and transcripts for many different languages, but will auto-caption everything in English by default first. At present, your videos can be captioned in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish in addition to English.

How to get captions for your foreign language video

  1. Create your video using one of Kaltura's media creation tools (Kaltura Express or Kaltura Personal Capture), or create your video separately then upload it into Kaltura.
  2. Navigate to your My Media page and locate the video.
  3. Click on the video.
  4. Select the Actions menu, and then select Edit.
  5. Under the Captions tab, select Upload captions file. Then, select the captions file from the the pop-up menu, and which language the uploaded captions will be:
    • Select Save

If your video has captions in both English and another language, and you choose to keep the English captions in your video, when your students watch your video, they will need to manually change the language to get to the correct captions. While viewing the video, they will need to select on the Closed Captions icon at the bottom of the video player.

Note: Changing this will automatically change the transcript that displays below the video to the language you select.

How to remove English captions from your foreign language video

The automatic English captions for your video are likely a string of nonsensical English words. If you do not intend for your students to use English captions at all when viewing your video, then removing them will make it easier for your students to get the correct captions when they watch your video.

  1. On your video's details page, click the Actions menu and select Edit.
  2. Select the Captions tab.
  3. Locate the "Actions" column and select the x icon that corresponds with the English transcript that you wish to delete.
