Makeup exam services are provided by request and are only available for course exams already approved for proctoring in the FSU Testing Center.
Before requesting a makeup exam, please note:
- Requests may be submitted only for students able to test in our main campus facility. Students testing at an off-campus proctoring site or with an online proctor need to make their arrangements directly with you and their selected test proctor.
- Testing windows for makeups should occur after the main exam window is concluded. For exams occurring on finals week, be sure to consult the university’s final exam schedule which may restrict when makeup exams can be scheduled.
- Requesting a makeup exam is a multi-step process. Exam slots must first be requested. Then, you will need to specify which students are permitted to register for the makeup exam. Finally, you will need to be sure to extend the availability date and due date for the students so they can access the exam.
- Makeup exam requests may be submitted at any time during the term, but seating is limited. We encourage instructors to place their requests for large courses as early as possible. Please give us 2 days to process your request. If we have difficulty accommodating your full request, we may contact you about adjusting exam dates or lowering the number of appointment slots.
Step 1: Add a makeup exam to the Testing Center’s exam calendar.
First, you must see if the Testing Center can support your makeup exam.
- Navigate to testing.fsu.edu.
- Under the Instructor Resources tab, select Requesting Services.
- Scroll down to find the Testing Center Services box and press the Request Services button. (You may wish to bookmark this URL for future use.)
- Near the top of the page, select the Manage Requests link.
- On the right side of the page, press the Course Actions button to display a dropdown menu. Select Add Exam.
- Enter the Exam Title and add the word “(Makeup)” to differentiate it from your main exam. For instance, if the exam is entitled “Exam 1”, you could call it “Exam 1 (Makeup)” or “Exam 1 Makeup”.
- Enter the percentage of Grade, Exam Format, and Length of the exam in minutes.
- Under the Make Up Exam field, select Yes.
- On the right, enter the Estimated Number of Students you anticipate you’ll allow to take a makeup exam. Please keep in mind seating can be extremely limited based on the date(s) you select, and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to provide the full number of seats requested.
- Enter a Start Date and End Date for the makeup exam. This must be after your original exam window. If we are unable to fit your makeup exam into any of the dates chosen, our system will automatically take this into account, creating appointments wherever possible.
- Add special instructions and exam aids. Be sure these match your original exam to avoid any confusion. Press Submit.
- Your request will immediately notify Assessment & Testing staff and enter the exam request queue. Please allow 1-2 business days to receive a response or call us at 850-644-3017 if it is an urgent request.
Step 2: Add approved students to the exam.
You must add students to the makeup exam, permitting them to make use of any exam slots offered by the Testing Center:
- Navigate to testing.fsu.edu.
- Under the Instructor Resources tab, select Requesting Services.
- Scroll down to find the Testing Center Services box and press the Request Services button. (You may wish to bookmark this URL for future use.)
- Near the top of the page, select the Manage Requests link.
- On the left side, select the linked title of the exam (e.g., “Exam 1 Makeup”).
- On the right side, press the Actions button to Edit Makeup Exam Student List. A new section should appear at the bottom of the page entitled “Edit Makeup Student List” when you do this.
- You may enter the students’ FSUIDs (e.g, "abc24d") one at a time on the right side or upload a list of FSUIDs in a single-column CSV file. Do not include a header—just the FSUIDs in the first column, one FSUID per row. Note: The FSUID is the first part of their email address, unlike the student's 9-digit EMPLID which isn't used in this application.
- Assuming your request is approved, students may register for their exam within two weeks of the start date of the exam.
> At this time, students will receive an email prompting them to make an appointment via the exam registration page. - You may continue adding students until the exam window closes, and students will be prompted to make an appointment immediately when added.
Step 3: Adjust exam availability dates and assign students in Canvas.
Instructors are responsible for extending the due date and exam availability date in Canvas. Also, be certain students are assigned to the correct version of the exam in Canvas based on the exam location (online, on-campus, or off-campus). Otherwise, they may not have access to the exam in Canvas on test day.
We know these are a lot of steps. Don't hesitate to call FSU Assessment & Testing at 850-644-3017 for hands-on assistance.
