How do I navigate/use Canvas's Gradebook?

The Gradebook is equipped with a variety of tools to help instructors keep the Gradebook organized and keep track of student submissions. Canvas has a Gradebook History feature that allows you to see when an assignment was graded and by whom. The Gradebook also allows you to mute an individual assignment to hide grades from students until you are done grading, as well as set the overall Grade Posting Policy to the Gradebook. This allows you additional flexibility on when students can view their grades.

Canvas Gradebook columns can easily be sorted by due date or assignment category using the Gradebook Filters. Check out our Gradebook Best Practices to find out the most efficient and effective way to use your Gradebook! Canvas also allows you to download assignment submissions to grade or view offline or export the grades as a CSV file to edit manually outside of Canvas if necessary.

Hiding Columns in the Gradebook

Canvas automatically creates a Gradebook column for each item in your course's Assignments list, including Assignments, Discussions and Quizzes. To have an Assignment not displayed in the Gradebook, you will need to have the Assignment's Display Grade as option set to Not Graded.

To have Discussions not displayed in the Gradebook, they will similarly need to have the Graded option unchecked.

The Canvas Quiz quiz engine will generate a column in the Gradebook for Graded Quizzes and Graded Surveys, but will not generate a column for Ungraded Surveys or Practice Quizzes.

The New Quiz quiz engine will generate a column in the Gradebook unless the Do not display in gradebook or the student's grade page option is checked under the Display Grade as option when creating the quiz.
