Florida State University faculty, staff, students, and alumni have an international presence. Wherever they are located, they require stable and timely access to FSU's Canvas learning management system (LMS). For most countries, as long as one has internet access, Canvas should be accessible. However, there are a few exceptions. Users located in some countries, such as China, report difficulty accessing Canvas. Please see our support article addressing access to Canvas in China for more information. There are a few areas where Canvas is completely inaccessible.
Canvas Blackout Areas
At this time, users cannot access Canvas at all from within the following countries and regions:
- Cuba
- Iran
- North Korea
- Syria
- Region of Crimea
It is illegal to hack your way into Canvas or to find any sort of workaround to access Canvas while you are located in one of these areas. FSU ODL Technical Support cannot recommend and will not assist you with finding a workaround to accessing Canvas while you are in one of these restricted areas.
Canvas intentionally restricts access in these places in order to comply with requirements related to embargoed countries and regions issued by the U.S. Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. For more information, please see Canvas's Which countries are restricted from using Canvas? resource.
