We offer the ability for users to change their "display name" in Canvas, however, it has come to our attention that this does not change their name everywhere in Canvas. Changes to the display name impact how your name displays in Discussions, Announcements, and Conversations (Inbox), but do not change the way your name is displayed anywhere else in Canvas. This option may be appealing for anyone who prefers to be called by their middle name. However, in order to avoid confusion we recommend that you avoid changing your "display name" in Canvas. If you have legally changed your name as a result of getting married, divorced, transitioning, or any other reason, then we recommend that you complete the process of officially changing your name at FSU. This way, your new name will display consistently everywhere in Canvas.
Please follow the directions below to legally change your name.
To change your official legal name at FSU, submit a photocopy of your driver's license, birth certificate, or marriage/divorce certificate to the University Registrar's office via fax (850-644-1597) or email a scan of your documentation to firstname.lastname@example.org. Or, you can hand deliver one of these documents into the University Registrar's office at University Center A, Suite 3900 (Stadium A). Once you see the change reflected on your FSU MyProfile page, please contact ODL Technical Support to update your Canvas account.
Please bring your updated, signed Social Security Card to your department's HR representative along with your filled-out Name Change Request form to change your name on University systems. If you are not officially changing your name, but would rather go by your middle name (e.g., Howard Allen Jones is your official name, but you prefer to have your name displayed as Allen Jones in Canvas), then you may complete the Preferred Name Change Request form instead. Once you see the change reflected on your FSU MyProfile page, please contact ODL Technical Support to update your Canvas account.
