Note: These instructions apply only to instructors of online courses using the FSU Testing Center. Visit Preparing Your Test for more information.

Background

The FSU Testing Center supports the use of multiple proctoring methods for your exams. However, this requires we create multiple versions of your exams in Canvas--each with a specific security configuration.  7-10 days before your exam begins, Testing Center staff make copies of your exam based on what you requested in the Instructor Request application. Then, they configure each version accordingly:

  • The FSU Testing Center / OAS version uses network-based security to ensure no one outside of the FSU Testing Center or the Office of Accessibility Service's testing center may access your exam. This setting is used instead of traditional password-based security settings.

  • The Honorlock version uses password-based security that connects with the Google Chrome Honorlock plugin. After completing a brief computer systems check and paying for the service, Honorlock securely injects the exam password into the browser to let the student into the exam.

  • The Off-Campus Testing Facility version uses password-based security that connects with FSU's secure Proctor Portal. Only approved proctors on an as-needed basis receive access to the exam password in order to administer the exam within their proctored facility.

Excuse Students from Unused Versions

Students should only have a grade in one version of the exam, leaving the other version(s) of the exam with a missing grade. To avoid grade calculation errors and confusion from students, we recommend excusing students from any unused versions of the exam in the gradebook after the makeup exam window ends.

See the instructions below, and feel free to contact the FSU Testing Center or ODL Technical Support for assistance.

Reviewing the grades

  1. On the course navigation menu, select Grades.
  2. Find the columns for each version of the exam. You can use the search bar at the top of the page to isolate these columns. For example, type "Exam 1" and select each version you find.
  3. Review each row of the gradebook to determine which students need to be excused. (Explained next.)
    • If you see students with no grade or attempt in all of the columns, they missed their exam. Typically, this means you will give them a 0 on one of the columns and excuse them from the other columns.
    • If you see students with a grade or attempt in multiple columns, investigate further to determine which grade to excuse. We recommend only grading the first attempt and excuse the rest. If you do not have a policy developed for managing this scenario, you may want to contact these students to ask why they took the exam multiple ways and discourage them from doing this again.

Excusing the grades

  1. Note the column and row and select the grade cell to be excused.
  2. Type ex in the cell. Then, press Enter on your keyboard, or click on a different cell.
  3. Alternatively, if you want to avoid typing, click on the cell and select the arrow-surrounded-by-rectangle icon that appears in the right of the cell. In the panel that appears on the right of the screen, select the yellow excused radio button.
