Supported File Types in Canvas Assignments

Canvas supports many different file types for assignments. SpeedGrader, the inline grading tool in Canvas, and Canvas DocViewer, the inline annotation and markup tool in Canvas, can support the following documents:

  • .doc -- Microsoft Word Document (old format)
  • .docx -- Microsoft Word Document
  • .key -- Software License Keys
  • .numbers -- Apple Numbers File
  • .odf -- OpenDocument Format
  • .odg -- OpenDocument Drawing Document
  • .odp -- OpenDocument Presentation
  • .ods -- OpenDocument Spreadsheet
  • .odt -- OpenDocument Text
  • .pages -- Apple Text Document
  • .pdf -- Portable Document Format
  • .ppt -- PowerPoint Presentation (old format)
  • .pptx -- PowerPoint Presentation
  • .rtf -- Rich Text Format
  • .sxc -- OpenOffice Calc Spreadsheet File
  • .sxi -- StarOffice Impress File
  • .sxw -- StarOffice Writer Document File
  • .txt -- Standard Text Document
  • .xlsx -- Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
  • .xls -- Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (old format)

Supported Image Preview Files

The following image files are supported by Canvas DocViewer:

  • .bmp
  • .jpeg
  • .jpg
  • .png
  • .svg
  • .tif
  • .tiff

Note: TIF and TIFF file previews are not native to most browsers and may not preview in Canvas due to browser limitations.
