Quiz setup for FSU Testing Center and off-campus proctoring

Introduction

Reminder: If any of your students have an extra time accommodation from the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS), remember to review this How to allow extra time for student(s) on a Canvas assessment article to ensure your students will receive the extra time stipulated in their OAS accommodations letter provided to you at the start of the term.

Part 1A: Set up an IP Filter on your Quiz (exam) in Classic Quizzes

All exams that are administered at the FSU Testing Center or the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) will need to have an IP Filter enabled for the exam.  The IP Filter ensures that students are only able to use computers that are physically located in the FSU Testing Center or OAS testing rooms.

To enable an IP Filter on your Canvas Quiz (exam):

  1. Navigate to your course site.
  2. Select Quizzes on the course navigation menu and locate the Quiz (exam) that needs to be duplicated.
  3. Select the three vertical dots at the far right of the Quiz name and then select Edit from the menu that appears.

  4. Check the Filter IP Addresses box.
  5. Select the magnifying glass icon next to the Filter IP Addresses text box.

  6. A pop-up window will appear.  Find and select the Testing Center and OAS (Current) label.

  7. Select the Save button.

Part 1B: Set up an IP Filter on your Quiz (exam) in New Quizzes

Unlike Classic Quizzes, New Quizzes does not have pre-set options and the IP range will have to be manually entered.  As these IP addresses and ranges will not be posted publicly, please contact the FSU Testing Center or FSU's Canvas Technical Support for assistance setting up an IP filter in Canvas' New Quizzes.

Part 2: Duplicate the Quiz (exam)

If some students will be testing on-campus (at the FSU Testing Center or at OAS) and other students will be testing at an off-campus proctor, you will need to duplicate your exam.  This ensures that students testing on campus can quickly and efficiently take their exam at an approved location while students testing off-campus are able to enter the exam when a proctor enters a password.

  1. Navigate to your course site.
  2. Select Quizzes on the course navigation menu and locate the Quiz (exam) that needs to be duplicated.
  3. Select the three vertical dots at the far right of the Quiz name and then select Copy to… from the menu that appears.

  4. In the panel that appears on the right of your screen, type in the current course name to duplicate the Quiz (exam) in this course. A drop-down list will start to predict the course name. Select the correct course name when it appears.

    • (optional) Use the drop-down menu to see a list of the course's modules.
    • (optional) Indicate where the duplicate Quiz should be added in the module (e.g., top of module, bottom of module, before [item], after [item], etc.).
  5. Click the Copy button.

  6. A green flag will appear with the notification: “Copy operation started successfully”.

  7. Wait a moment, then reload the Quizzes page. The duplication may take a few minutes to finish.

Part 3: Update the settings in the duplicated off-campus version

  1. The duplicate Quiz should populate on the line below the original.

  2. Open the duplicate to see the Quiz overview. It can be helpful to have the original and the duplicate side-by-side in different browser windows.

  3. Change the name of the duplicate Quiz so the two are easier to differentiate (e.g., add “off-campus testing” after the original name).

  4. Change the off-campus version's assignment group so that it matches the assignment group of the original quiz.

    Please note: The duplicated quiz will always be added to “Imported Assignments” regardless of the original quiz's assignment group. It is especially important to ensure that the off-campus version is in the same assignment group as the original version in courses that utilize assignment group weights for grade calculation purposes.

  5. Check the Require an access code box and type in the access code that you wish to use. The FSU Testing Center staff will check your access code and securely provide it to designated off-campus providers. Access codes should never be shared with your student(s). This access code is in place to prevent your students from accessing the quiz outside of the desired proctoring environment.
  6. Uncheck the Filter IP Addresses box.

  7. For the off-campus version, remove “Everyone” from the Assign window and instead add the names of any student(s) who will take the off-campus version. If different availability dates are needed for the off-campus version, make sure to enter them.

  8. Select the Save button.
  9. You will get a pop-up warning stating that the off-campus version is not assigned to the entire class. Select the Continue button in the pop-up warning window.

Part 4: Gradebook settings

Your student(s) taking the off-campus version need to be excused from the original Quiz (exam), otherwise the Canvas Gradebook will penalize them for not taking the original version.

  1. On the course navigation menu, select Grades.
  2. Find the row for your student and the column for the original Honorlock version of the exam. You can use the search bar at the top of the page to isolate a single student's grade row.
  3. Select the grade cell.
  4. Excuse the student from this exam version by typing “ex” in the cell. Then, press Enter on your keyboard, or click on a different cell.

    1. Alternatively, if you want to avoid typing, click on the cell and select the arrow-surrounded-by-rectangle icon that appears in the right of the cell. In the panel that appears on the right of the screen, select the yellow excused radio button.
