At 10:05 am ET on 1/14/2020 Canvas has reported that there are no additional reports of the inactivity error occurring, and that Canvas is now working as intended. At 06:23 am ET on 01/14/2020 Canvas reported that users may be receiving a message on Canvas that states "You are not currently logged in, possibly due to a long period of inactivity." This error message then logs the user off of Canvas, and they are not able to successfully use the website afterwards. Canvas is currently investigating this issue.
